New York Fashion Week Street Style Was All About Expressive Minimalism

New York Fashion Week has just come to a close and, as is often the case, the showgoer’s looks on the street (and of course, the front row) were just as inspiring as those on the runway. This February, unexpectedly balmy weather in New York had attendees test driving their spring styling chops and, give us a peek at the trends to expect in the months ahead. Of course, the street style set is known for serving looks across the spectrum—from the ultra minimalist to eccentric peacock that delights every photographer’s flashbulb—but we were still able to tease out a dominating trends.

Expressive Minimalism at NYFW

One such overarching theme (in addition to the baseball caps used to protect showgoers’ hair from the surprise snow flurries) was a wave of expressive minimalism—an offshoot of pared-back dressing; one with more flare and freedom, expanding the typically stark genre and imbuing it with personality and fun. Clean silhouettes were pushed to a point of interest through the unexpected use of color, shape, accessories—sometimes all three. It’s a mood for spring that feels as elevated as last year’s much-hyped quiet luxury movement, but with a more artful, intellectual twist.
