The Look of Love, a new work by Mark Morris that riffs on Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s legendary song catalog, is currently enjoying a brief run at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music). For the show’s costumes, which capture the choreographer’s exuberant celebration of music, he tapped his frequent collaborator (and friend) Isaac Mizrahi.

History of Collaboration

Isaac Mizrahi and Mark Morris have a longstanding friendship and collaboration that dates back to the early 1990s. Their creative partnership has resulted in over 20 productions where Mizrahi has designed costumes and sometimes set designs for Morris’s work.

Collaborative Approach

Mizrahi describes their working relationship as an open-ended conversation where he is always flattered when Morris asks him to design costumes. With a shared love for music, Mizrahi’s synesthesia often plays a role in translating the music into vibrant color palettes for the costumes.

  • Mizrahi’s initial ideas for The Look of Love involved a sophisticated geometric design in black and white, but Morris’s input led to a rich color palette of dusty magentas, mossy greens, and mustard-yellows.
  • The costumes’ color palette also influenced the design of the folding chairs used on stage, showcasing Mizrahi’s attention to detail and commitment to enhancing the overall visual experience.

Performance and Reception

The dancers perform on stage with minimal props, emphasizing the choreography and costumes as the focal points of the production. The painted folding chairs, inspired by the costumes’ color palette, add a subtle yet impactful visual element to the performance.

As The Look of Love continues its run at BAM, audiences have the opportunity to experience Morris and Mizrahi’s collaborative vision come to life on stage.

The Look of Love, presented with support from Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels, runs at BAM until Saturday, March 23.
