Omar Apollo’s Loewe Look for the 2024 Met Gala Had No References, “Just Vibes”
Omar Apollo is undoubtedly having a moment. As he approaches his 27th birthday later this month, the singer-songwriter has already made significant cultural waves in just over a month. From hosting an impromptu outdoor party following the unveiling of his latest single “Spite” on Orchard Street to walking the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the prestigious 2024 Met Gala, Apollo is living a dream that most artists only dare to imagine.
Stepping into Cultural Iconography
Apollo’s attendance at this year’s Met Gala was not just an honor but also a testament to his growing influence in the fashion world. The Met, with its rich history and cultural significance, has been an event Apollo himself had long admired from afar.
“The Met is such a crazy cultural moment that I’ve witnessed for years,” said Apollo ahead of the gala. “Getting invited to attend was really exciting. I look amazing.”
A Loewe Masterpiece: The Embroidered Jacket
As a Loewe ambassador, Apollo’s collaboration with designer Jonathan Anderson has culminated in an exquisite ensemble for the Met Gala. His outfit—a custom-made single-breasted wool jacket embellished with oversized bugle beads made from aluminum—was inspired by a piece from Loewe’s recent womenswear collection.
“I remember it standing out to me when I first saw a preview of the collection,” recalled Apollo. “So, when we started conversations with Loewe for the Met and reviewed Jonathan’s sketches, I immediately recognized the look and knew it was perfect.”
Incorporating “The Garden of Time”
For this year’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” Apollo and his stylist Brandon Tan worked with Loewe to infuse floral elements into the ensemble. Drawing inspiration from Jonathan Anderson’s spring 2024 collection, they integrated delicate crystal embellishments reminiscent of artist Lynda Benglis’ work. These crystals adorned the jacket lapels, adding a layer of refined sophistication.
Aesthetic Consistency: From Pre-Party to Gala
Even before his Met Gala appearance, Apollo was seen honoring this year’s theme at Vogue’s pre-Met Gala party. Wearing a vintage Yohji Yamamoto button-down from 1996—a shirt older than him—Apollo showcased his unique style sensibility and adherence to the “florals for spring” dress code.
“Just Vibes”: A Style Philosophy
When asked about references for his Met Gala look, Apollo revealed a refreshing simplicity. “I honestly didn’t have any references,” he said. “It was all vibes.”
This laid-back approach resonates with many who admire his ability to blend effortless cool with high fashion. His collaboration with stylist Brandon Tan underscores this philosophy: less is more when it comes to curated style.
