19 Minutes With Lando Norris: The Surprise Winner of the Miami Formula 1 Race
Congratulations are in order for Lando Norris, who has achieved an extraordinary milestone in his Formula 1 career. The Bristol-born 24-year-old driver, racing with Team McLaren since the start of his five-year F1 journey, clinched his first-ever victory at the Miami Grand Prix. Holding off Max Verstappen—a formidable opponent who had dominated the last 24 races—Norris’s win was a testament to his skill and determination.
As Norris crossed the finish line, the broadcast captured his infectious excitement: two hearty screams followed by a contagious giggle, proclaiming, “I love you all. I knew it. I knew it when I came into this moment.” This victory wasn’t just a personal triumph; it was an affirmation of McLaren’s resurgence as a competitive force in F1.
Insights from the Paddock
In an exclusive chat, Lando Norris shared insights into his mindset heading into this landmark weekend. Besides discussing his performance on the track, we delved into his sense of style and passion for photography—a hobby that offers him solace away from racing.
Life in Miami
Vogue: Hey Lando—thanks for taking the time. It’s a whirlwind here in Miami with all the action around the race.
Landon Norris: All good! Yeah, it’s been fun—I’ve been playing padel at Reserve. Love that place by the Miami Design District. I try to play wherever I am. Some of the other drivers take it more seriously, but for me, it’s just about having fun with friends.
Team Dynamics
Where’s your head at right now, both with Miami and with the season so far?
Norris: Honestly, there aren’t too many things that are different. We’re in quite a settled place—a good one, I think. Everyone on the team is working together better than ever before. There’s noise from other teams and places, but me and Oscar [Piastri], we’re really focusing on what we need to focus on. 2024 has been strong for us.
Off-Track Style
Paddock ‘Fits’
Vogue: What do you think of paddock ‘fits’? Do you dress up for arrivals?
Norris: I’m more a loungewear guy. There’s nothing better than being in comfy things—hoodies included! So, it’s not really front and center with me, the whole to-do around arrival ‘fits’…
Watches
- I love my watches. McLaren is with Richard Mille as a team, but I’m also a fan personally.
- I have a few [watches]. One day I hope to collect more, especially the old ones and those with colorful Stella dials on Rolexes.
Hobbies and Beyond
Photography & TikTok
Vogue: Let’s talk about your photography, shared under @lando.jpg. Is it just to have an outlet away from racing?
Norris: Honestly, I’ve let it die down a bit over the past few months. It’s really about capturing memories with friends. Photography has always been close to my heart—Tokyo is my favorite place in the world for it.
Potential Media Ventures
Have you thought about podcasting or being in front of the camera?
Norris: I feel terrible on-camera. Maybe one day, but right now, driving my car and going home is what I prefer!
